Suspected Rapist/Murderer Buried Alive

In a small town in Bolivia of about 5,000 people, a 17-year-old suspected of raping and murdering a 35-year-old woman has been buried alive by the furious locals. I couldn't find the exact date of this incident, but it seems to have happened within the last 5 days

Now, while a small, emotional and less rational part of me feels as if justice has been adequately served, the more logical and rational side of me cannot help but notice the word "suspect": What if he was innocent?
And even if he was indeed responsible for the rape and murder of the 35-year-old woman, is death (unplanned and "illegal") the answer? And what will and should happen to the locals who were involved in the burying of the 17-year-old?
